I've still got it

I don't think I recounted how my store was having not one, but two Christmas parties. Because people find work parties to be so much fun.

Right.

The first one was spur of the moment and while it wasn't as terrible as I'd expected, I did find myself standing there alone a few times and feeling kind of stupid that no one wanted to talk to me. Fun.

Tonight was the second one. A White Elephant Gift Exchange that I was doing my best to ignore, hoping everyone would just assume I had class. Nope, not the case, they knew I was done with finals. So, I go. Mostly under the argument that if you're moaning about not having friends, (which I have been, even in people's Christmas cards, SORRY.) you can't turn ANY invitation down, since you never know where it will lead.

Right.

I get stuck with the worst gift in the pile (a reindeer on top of a grandma that moves in a humping-like motion while playing, you guessed it, Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer) while nearly everyone else gets a gift card to somewhere they'd actually go.

But.

The real gift I got was that I had an honestly good time, I never felt awkward and/or loserish and I even got a phone number from a possibly single, definitely straight guy in my age range (the son of a woman I work with, he got in tonight for his visit for the holidays) and the invitation to call him when I'm in San Francisco visiting my sister. He was cute. He was interesting. And not to pin too much to one conversation, but when I was talking to him, for the first time in months I felt like I was cute and interesting. And that's better than any gift card.

(Although, when the woman who got the Target gift card gave it to me on the sly, I thought, sweet! Toliet paper and laundry detergent I don't have to pay for.)

It's lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you

When I lived in LA (did I ever really live there or was it just like an extended hellish visit?) I hated the lack of change of season and found it really hard to get into Christmas shopping due to the ever present sunshine.

I am not having that problem this year. Could be that we had some actual cold weather for like a day and I hated it. Hated it.

Anyhow. This weekend was gorgeous and I got to go to a street fair (in December!) and go for a glorious hike. Loved it.

Comments on the street fair though...
Doesn't everyone who wants a rain stick already have one? Who is this guy selling them to?
Fry bread as street fair food was a great difference. Not that I had any, but I could have.
Character of the day: The drunk man who had the "No Alcohol Beyond This Point" sign stuck to himself. I should have made friends.

missed connection

Thursday, December 7. At what used to be called Nothing but Noodles but now carries pizzas and paninis on Swan. We had a semi-funny conversation about how we were tired, hungry and indecisive. If you went home and enjoyed your basil pesto chicken pasta while watching last night's Top Chef and had enough wine that you didn't even mind that Grey's Anatomy was a repeat, call me, we should definitely become NBFs.

inspi(RED)

Today is World AIDS Day. Okay, so you know AIDS is devestating Africa, unless you've been under a rock. But that doesn't mean we've got it under wraps here in the US.

So... if you don't know your status, make a point to get tested. Sure, you might be right that you're at little to no risk, but do it anyhow, it doesn't even have to hurt. Look how easy it is to find a testing center.

You can't go with Ashley Judd around Africa as a global youth AIDS ambassador? Can you get to a Gap? Good. Go buy a t-shirt. It's the least you can do. And I can vouch that the t-shirt's really soft, as a bonus.

Be safe.
